DDSRA Individual Tournament Report: 23 – 25 November 2013 , David Lloyd, Monifieth
By Graeme Patullo
An impressive 25 players enter the 2013 DDSRA Individual Tournament held at David Lloyd Centre, Monifieth.
With the exceptionally large entry, qualifying rounds were played on the Friday evening. Most notable matches/results from the qualifiers were:
• Ray Kelday’s three games to 1 defeat of Graeme Patullo – after losing the first game 0-9
• Shane Lindsay’s 4-game tussle with the fast-improving Ken Daly (9-6 in the 4th)
With the field now whittled down to 16 players, the 1st Round ‘proper’ commenced on Saturday morning. With so many entrants, it was inevitable that there would be some close matches between similarly-ranked players.
The pick of the 1st-round matches came in the match between Joe Ghaemi (Dundee University; No.6 seed) and Mark James (Montrose; No.11 seed). Both players enjoy hard-hitting squash and in five closely-fought games, Mark took final game, 9-5.
All of the top-4 seeds progressed with 3-0 wins.
In the ¼-finals, there were some more closely-fought matches between the top players. Again, the pick of the matches involved neither of the top two seeds. Instead, the excitement came in the matches between Tom Adams (no.5 seed) and Adam Robertson (no.4 seed). Adam, after taking the 1st game had a game-ball in the 2nd but failed to capitalise, losing it 9-10. He fought hard to win the third game 9-8. However, his exertions from the first three games seemed to have taken their toll as Tom’s gritty style won out to win the 4th game 9-0 and the 5th 9-3.
The ‘other’ match-of-the-round, was an all-Montrose affair. Mark James, after his ‘battle’ with Joe in the previous round played DDSRA’s version of Peter Pan, Boyd Kydd. The first two games were shared (9-7 to Mark followed by a 10-8 to Boyd). The third game was to prove decisive. Boyd took an early lead only for Mark to claw back to 6-all. At this point, Mark’s extra power seemed to dominate and he stormed to a 9-6 win (2 games to 1 lead). The 4th was simpler for Mark. After taking an early lead, he never looked in trouble, winning the 4th game 9-4.
Sunday morning saw the first semi-final between top-seed, Gregor Newton (Abbotsford) and Tom Adam. It was Gregor who started quickly (or was it Tom who started slowly?) racing to a 2 games to nil lead (9-1, 9-1). Tom battled hard in the 3rd but Gregor was always in control, taking it 9-6.
The second semi-final was again an ‘all-Montrose’ affair, this time Peter Buchan coming up against Mark James. All four games were closely-fought with the players sharing the first two games (9/6 to Peter, 9-7 to Mark). The next two games were both won with 9-6 scores – with Peter taking them both for a 3-1 victory.
The keen-anticipated final between the top-2 seeds, Gregor (Abbotsford) and Peter (Montrose) didn’t live up to its billing. Peter’s tougher route to the final seemed to have sapped his energy and it was Gregor who dominated most of the rallies. Peter’s retrieving skills were tested to the full as Gregor pushed him to the four corners of the court whilst, at the same time, dominated the T-area.
Gregor took all three games to become the well-deserved DDSRA champion for 2013.
Whilst the Main event was progressing, players who had lost in the qualifying/first rounds were contesting the Plate event. Again, Graeme Patullo failed to progress past the qualifying round (therefore missing out on the first round of both events!), losing meekly to the wily Ken Daly in 3 games – a significant result for Ken (as we will read later).
Pick of the Plate quarter-finals was the match between Abbotsford’s Ray Kelday and Forthill’s Shane Lindsay. With lets and strokes liberally sprinkled throughout, and the referee/umpire/marker being tested fully, the match was poised at two games each. The 5th game was a classic! Again both players tested the marker as they progressed to “9-all”. With neither player appearing keen to win the match, after both had failed to convert match-balls, it was left to Shane to finally end the match with a deft drop-shot to progress into the semis, 10-9 in the 5th. The remaining quarter-finals were all 3-0 victories.
Semi-final #1 saw Dave Williams progress without hitting a ball as Ken Daly’s body finally packed up. After three bruising matches in less than 24 hours, Ken decided to call a halt to his pain. Semi-final #2 took a little longer as Shane defeated David Brown in three quick games 9-3, 9-0, 9-2.
The final was brilliantly marked as both players, expert in the finer points of the game of squash artistry, danced around the court. The mercurial Dave Williams (RAF Leuchars) took the first game narrowly (9-7) before easing to a 9-4 win in the second game. Shane fought hard in the third as both players recognised its importance. At 8-all, Dave called “1” to hand Shane a “game ball”. However, Shane was left swinging at fresh air as Dave’s thumping drive whistled past him, giving Dave “8-all, match ball”. Dave’s tactics seemed to have changed as he went for an audacious drop-shot to end the match. It failed – and Shane was again serving for the game. This time he triumphed as Dave again failed with an impossible drop-shot taking the match into a fourth game – or so we thought.
Sadly, for all involved, Dave announced that, due to injury he would be unable to continue. Shane therefore became DDSRA Plate Champion – outlasting all of the other entrants.
The Ladies event had fewer entrants than expected but Jennifer McArtney and Tricia Watson progressed to the final. The first two games were both won narrowly (9-6, 10-8) by Jennifer before she raced to a decisive 9-1 victory in the third to claim the Ladies DDSRA title.
With all the excitement of the ‘Main’ and ‘Plate’ events, one could be forgiven for over-looking the handicap event. Despite the note-pads, lecture notes and reference books littering the off-court viewing areas, matches seemed to continue from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Nobody really knew how the scoring system actually worked (“point-per-rally” and “deduct two points for winning a game” etc) and, I don’t think that anyone really cared. In the end, everyone who participated seemed to have a whale of a time, playing plenty of matches against each other. In the end, a Combined winner (Tricia Watson) and a Ladies winner (Courtney Vijars) was announced.
In summary, an excellent weekend was had by everyone who took part. Thanks to all who marked/refereed any matches. Congratulations to all the tournament winners. An especially huge “Thank You” to Dave Williams (for devising a draw so ingenious that even Einstein would have required scientists from CERN to help him understand it’s full complexities) and Jennifer McArtney (for ensuring that everyone had plenty squash and that all matches were started (approximately) on time – and for her endless supplies of Jelly Babies and Jelly Beans (for energy, of course).
IMPORTANT – Meeting with John Dunlop, CEO Scottish Squash posted 26/08/2013
The following is a message from David Williams (DDSRA Match Secretary (Mens)
We have arranged for John Dunlop, Chief Executive of Scottish Squash (& Racketball) to come to Forthill Squash Club on 3rd September at 1900 (7pm).
The purpose of the meeting is to take the first steps towards working with Scottish Squash without necessarily worrying about affiliation or other costs (though I’m sure that will come up). (On a side note, the committee agreed at the meeting on Tuesday 20th to drop the non-SSRA DDSRA fees from £80 back down to £40. Affiliated clubs remain at £20.)
I would strongly encourage ALL teams to send at least one representative (not necessarily a committee member or team captain) to attend and speak with John directly. We want to find out what he would like us to do, what he thinks SSRA can do for us, and how we can start building a brighter future for squash in the area.
I’m sure I don’t need to point out that over the last few years DDSRA teams have suffered – Brechin and Forfar both folded, last year we nearly lost North Fife 1 and RAF Leuchars, and now St Andrews University are having their courts demolished (!?) despite being one of the most dedicated and active clubs in the region. To prevent further closures and develop the sport at all levels from grassroots, competitive juniors, students, club level (where most of us currently lie) Competitive Masters and perhaps even some Performance players, we are going to need assistance from our governing body.
A working relationship with SSRA may well be our only real chance to not only prevent further closures, but hopefully turn things around and grow the sport. I’m sure none of us want to leave a legacy of there being no organized squash in the region. I think it’s worth a try and encourage as many clubs to send representation as possible.
I look forward to seeing people there, if you have any queries please email me either on DDSRA or directly at email@example.com, or call me on the phone numbers below.

2012-2013 Season Individual Tournament – Update 14th March 2013
Taking place from the 8th – 10th March 2013 at Forthill Squash Club
It was with regret that the decision was made to postpone the men’s open and the ladies events due to the lack of entries (6 for the men and 3 for the women).
The men’s handicap event went ahead with 6 men and 2 women competing in a round robin format that meant everyone had 4 to 6 games. The final was contested by Chris Thistlethwaite of Dundee University and Robert Mulligan of Forthill. Chris won 15-11, 17-15.
It is hoped that the other events will be run at a future date but this will depend on the level of support. Please contact Jennifer McArtney if you have any comments about why the entries were so low or when would be suitable to re schedule

At the Dundee and District Squash Rackets Association annual general meeting on Tuesday 15th May at Forthill Sports Club in Broughty Ferry, the retiring President Dave Gordon was presented with a wallet and a framed photograph of himself with some very amusing dialogue from the spoof newspaper “The Scotchman”. (Posted 2012-06-22) –
Dave said that he was thrilled with the gifts and would like to express his grateful thanks to the Dundee & District Committee and all clubs and players within. He would also like to wish the thoroughly merited new President Jennifer McArtney and her youthful new committee, lots of success in the future ahead.
